UPDATE 4/8/20:  In response to the Governor's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Executive Order, the DNR has SUSPENDED all open burn permits across the state of Michigan.  NO agricultural burning or burning of yard waste is allowed.  Recreational type campfires and fire pits using seasoned firewood according to Watertown Township's burning ordinance ARE allowed with a valid burning permit (call 517-321-6622 daily to make sure weather conditions are appropriate to have a recreational fire).

Burn Permits

A permit is required for outdoor burning.  Burn permits are free, but the fine for not having a burn permit can range from $250 - $500.  A resident or property owner can be issued a burning permit effective for the calendar year of January 1 - December 31.  General permits can be obtained between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm.  Bonfire permits can be obtained between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00pm.

Burn permits are issued at the fire station located at 7720 W. Grand River; your annual permit will be issued after you have read and acknowledged the township burn ordinance.  The ordinance lists your responsibilities and burning restrictions.  You will be given a copy of your signed permit for your records.  Once you have received your permit, you will be directed to call the phone number listed on your permit each day you will be burning and a recording will inform you if burning is allowed that day.  If the conditions are not favorable for burning , you will be informed that no burning is permitted that day.

Citizens can also apply for a burn permit online and the required information will be sent to fire administration for approval.  Once reviewed and authorized, the resident will receive a copy of their permit with the applicable rules and regulations via return email.  This will come with instructions to print and have available for inspection upon request by fire department personnel.   Please note:  you are only applying for a burning permit via this online process.  You may not burn until you have received an actual permit via return email.
